Just answer a few questions
What instruments or voices do you want? You can even select from pre-defined ensembles or create your own. What key? Time signature? Music font? Tempo?

Finale will set up your score, complete with staves in correct order, instrument transpositions, tempo marking, staff groupings, intelligent page layout that automatically adjusts system position, size, and space between staves to reduce white space on the page.

You can also choose from a wide variety of personal document styles, specify the number of measures in your score, and insert text for the title, composer, arranger, lyricist, copyright and a sub-title.

- Maestro Wide
- Maestro
- Petrucci
- Engraver
- Broadway Copyist
- Jazz
- Seville
- Tamburo

Create the look you want with Personal Document Styles. Customize the appearance of new documents by controlling text and music fonts, page layout, and more.

Entering Notes

- Enter notes with your computer keyboard and/or mouse.
- Use your MIDI keyboard (or any other MIDI device) in combination with your computer keyboard and mouse to enter notes and chords.
- Play a MIDI keyboard and watch your music appear on-screen in real time.
- Use Finale’s exclusive MicNotator® to play notes into your microphone with a brass or woodwind instrument.
- Scan existing sheet music.
- Import MIDI, MusicXML, Smartscore, or Finale family notation files.

No other notation software offers this breadth of note entry options.

Simple Note Entry

Enter notes with your computer or MIDI keyboard. Click notes onto the staff or use MIDI to indicate pitch. Or enter notes with the numeric pad and keys ‘A’ ‘B’ ‘C’ ‘D’ ‘E’ ‘F’ and ‘G.’ But entering notes is just the start. You can also:

- Change octaves
- Enter rests
- Add accidentals
- Create triplets
- Add grace notes
- Add notes in a chord to an existing note
- Enter articulations on the fly or ‘lock in’ an articulation to place on several notes
- Change the key or time signature simply with key commands
- Add expressions like dynamics or tempos
- Enter a rhythmic pattern using a single note and then re-pitch the repeated notes using your MIDI or computer keyboard

Keystrokes are intuitive and a special key map for laptop users is provided. Best of all, if you prefer certain key commands, change the defaults in Finale to whatever you like.

HyperScribe®
Enter notes in real-time as you play a MIDI keyboard.

- You can play along with a click, provide the click as you play (for example with a sustain or other foot pedal), or enter the pulse later.
- Record your live vocal or instrumental performance — an exclusive Finale feature.
- Recording first and second endings with HyperScribe is seamless — Finale skips over the first ending on the second pass allowing for smooth transitions
- Specify a playback tempo before you record or Finale can record at the tempo you use when playing your MIDI keyboard.
- Record continuous data including the sustain pedal.

MicNotator® – No MIDI Required
This revolutionary technology allows you to enter notation into Finale simply by playing your brass or woodwind instrument.

Pick up your clarinet and start making music!

Scanning
No other notation program offers scanning as accurate as Finale, with its included Smartscore® Lite by Musitek®.

Finale’s Smartscore Lite Scanning includes:

- Improved accuracy with XML technology including triplet recognition and better results when scanning polyphonic music.
- Easier Scanning – scanning is brought right to your fingertips in the Launch Window. With a compatible scanner, Finale provides an auto-preview and automatically chooses resolution and contrast settings.* All you have to do is click "Final Scan."
- Secondary voice recognition – counterpoint.
- Interface to specify the instrumentation so that your staves will automatically be properly transposed and configured for playback.
- Multiple page scans.
- Correct page formatting including system and staff sizes.
- Up to 32nd note resolution.
- Improved recognition of multi-measure rests, grace notes, and repeat measures (slash and dot symbol).
- Recognition of grayscale images to simplify the use of scanners, including HP models, that save in this format.
- Improved recognition when scanning scores with optimized staves.

Smartscore Lite is designed to scan original engraved music – not handwritten scores. These examples were scanned from original engraved music using a Canon N670U scanner at 360 dpi. Both images were untouched to enhance results. The PhotoScore example was transferred, without edits, to a competitor's product. The time to correct errors in the two examples: Finale, 10 seconds to add missing rests and tie necessary notes, hence the term 'easy edits' compared to the 2 minutes it took to add Voice 2 notes, correct notes, change notes from Voice 1 to 2, etc., in the competitor's product, thus the term 'difficult' or time-consuming edits.

Need additional recognition?
Finale is also compatible with full-fledged scanning products including Smartscore X and SharpEye. Sold separately, these products offer expanded recognition.

- Finale and Smartscore X are fully integrated. Finale is automatically launched from Smartscore X and files import with notes, text, lyrics, dynamics, articulations, and chord symbols intact. Upgrading to Smartscore X is optional and once installed, replaces the Lite version when “Scanning” is initiated in Finale. Discounted pricing is available for Finale registered users.
- Finale also imports SharpEye MusicXML files. (While SharpEye is Windows only software, the MusicXML files it creates can be read by Finale on Macintosh and Windows computers.)

*Scanning directly from Smartscore Lite within Finale is supported by nearly all Windows scanners and Epson scanners on Macintosh.

Adding Markings, Lyrics, and More

Lyrics – Improved in Finale 2011
Finale allows an unlimited number of lyric verses and automatically spaces the lyrics to match the notes they’re attached to. New in Finale 2011 – Lyrics are more easily entered, instantly appear exactly as they’ll print out, and are automatically spaced with engraver precision.

Dynamics & Tempo markings
Finale makes entering, creating, copying and moving dynamics, tempo indications, and other text and markings intuitive and powerful.

Chords
Enter chord symbols by typing in their names or playing them with a MIDI keyboard. Change or delete notes without changing your chords. New in Finale 2011 – Instant Capo Chords.

Percussion Notation – Expanded in Finale 2011
Finale has always offered unparalleled power and flexibility with percussion notation – now it’s also incredibly easy to use.

Tuplets
Default positioning looks great, even when the tuplet begins with rests, and tuplets automatically reposition when notes are raised or lowered on the staff. Tuplet brackets avoid rests and staff lines. Brackets follow the angle of the stems when on stem side and follow the angle of notes when on the note side.

More
Finale also automates countless other entry tasks like repeats and codas, cue notes or rehearsal marks to your parts, and tablature and fretboards for guitar and other fretted instruments.

Dynamics and Tempo Markings

In Finale, expressions include dynamics, tempo markings, rehearsal marks, technique text like arco and pizzicato, and expressive text.
Reinvented and streamlined
Selection, entry and placement of expressions or articulation markings is quick and intuitive. Once in your score, they are easily moved – now with transparent selection handles, so they never obscure the object you’re editing. You can instantly change the appearance of an entire category of expressions or articulations

Drag and drop expressions
Simply drag the text anywhere in your score. Now you simply drag text items anywhere. Clear visual feedback instantly shows you what each selected expression is attached to, which changes dynamically as you drag – even across pages. Drag expressions and rest assured they’ll always change playback – and appear in linked parts – just the way you want them to.

Plus, you can now drag-apply expressions to multiple staves at once. No matter how you enter these markings, Finale continues to apply the same collision avoidance rules so you don’t have to think about it.

Automatic Lyric Placement – Improved in Finale 2011
Lyrics space themselves and the notes they’re attached to automatically so that you can have engraver-level quality without manual editing.

- Additional space at the beginning of measures has been removed.
- Punctuation, at the beginning or end of a lyric, can now be ignored for better alignment and centering of different verses.

Auto-Slur Melismas – Improved in Finale 2011
Finale analyzes your lyrics, and automatically places slurs anytime a syllable lasts for more than one note. You can even specify dashed slurs in situations with multiple verses.
New in Finale 2011 – The first note of a melismatic passage no longer receives unnecessary space.

Easy Edits – Improved in Finale 2011

- Finale 2011 makes it much easier to access multiple fonts and font sizes within lyrics. Now you can easily access the text menu or use common keyboard shortcuts as you're typing into score.
- Lyric fonts, word extensions, and hyphens now instantly update as you enter them and look exactly as they will print out.
- If you don't recall the associated keystroke for a needed umlaut, grave accent or other diacritical character, you can now simply select those items by sight.
- New Lyrics Window lets you switch between typing into score and automatically assigning existing lyrics without switching tools.

Automatic Word Extensions – Improved in Finale 2011
Word extensions automatically draw to the next rest and also wrap to the next staff system. If the music expands or contracts, the extensions stretch or shrink to fit.

Also in Finale

- Smart Hyphens - Finale offers automatic hyphen placement with precision results even in tight spacing. Plus Lyric hyphens automatically wrap to the next staff system.
- Export all or part of your lyrics to a word-processing document.

Percussion Notation – Expanded in Finale 2011

Whether you’re an expert user customizing percussion scores, or not sure where a bass drum goes on the staff, Finale gets your percussion notation to look and sound perfect in no time.

New in Finale 2011
Finale has always offered unparalleled power and flexibility with percussion notation. Last year the process of getting notes on percussion staves to look – and playback – exactly the way you want them to was simplified. This year Finale 2011 also lets you change Percussion Playback Maps on any staff anywhere in your score, making changes between pitched and non-pitched percussion easy.

Easy to Enter

- Simply drag the cursor over the staff and on-screen feedback indicates whether you’re about to enter a snare, bass drum, or other percussion instrument – and displays the appropriate notehead.
- Dragging notes up and down the staff scrolls smoothly through all available instruments.
- Seamlessly copy music back and forth between percussion and standard notation staves.

Automatic Playback

- Automatic playback configuration – your snare will playback with a snare sound – and so forth – without any manual intervention.
- Easily re-map your percussion playback without changing your score. Change playback from one instrument library to another – or to an external midi device. If you use built-in sounds in the office, and external MIDI sounds at home – Finale 2010 was made for you.

Plus:

- Create custom percussion MIDI maps for ultimate control over the sounds your percussion staves play back.
- Easily change between pitched and non-pitched percussion by changing percussion playback maps on any staff anywhere in your score
- When more than one instrument appears on the same line or space, you can now control which appears first – you don’t have to switch from side stick to snare.
- Choose to retain staff position or MIDI pitch when copying between percussion and standard notation staves.
- On-screen feedback indicates when a staff contains notes not found in that staff’s percussion layout.

Chords – Expanded in Finale 2011

Enter chord symbols by typing in their names, playing them with a MIDI keyboard, or by alternating between these two entry methods – all without visiting a menu. Simple, intuitive keystrokes make it easy to move to the next beat or measure as well as delete or edit existing chords.

New in Finale 2011 – Instant Capo Chords
Finale 2011 automates the process of adding capo chords to your music and gives you the freedom to control whether they replace or appear in addition to non-capo chords, as well as whether they appear in specific sections or the entire piece.

Additional Chord Functionality

Chord symbols in Finale featuring the Broadway Copyist hand-written font.

- Change or delete notes without changing your chords.
- Attach chords to measures – whether or not they contain notes or rests – and have the chords appear and playback exactly how you wish.
- On-screen feedback lets you instantly see what beat or measure each chord is attached to even if you manually reposition your chords.
- Enter chords before entering notes.
- Easily create chord-only charts.
- Chords and fretboards automatically resize as your page resizes – plus you have easy scaling controls for fretboards and chords in document options.
- Intuitive QWERTY and MIDI keystrokes let you move the cursor to the first beat of adjacent measures (plus it’s easy to move to adjacent beats) and vertically stack chords.
- Chords attached to whole rests or notes automatically appear at the beginning of a measure.

Repeats and Codas

Repeats are easy to add and edit and they automatically play back. Select the measures that will appear in the first ending. Select "Create first and second ending." You’re done.

Finale automatically does the rest of the work for you:

- All numbers and brackets are entered and lined up.
- Repeat numbers are automatically followed by periods.

You can also choose to:

- Add mid-measure repeats without affecting your measure numbering.
- Specify where text and brackets appear in your score and parts.
- Align Brackets and Reset Bracket Position.

Create Codas
Finale automatically creates space, text, and symbols as well as controls playback.

Tablature and Fretboards

Choose your instrument from the Setup Wizard and enter your music. There is little left to do.

New in Finale 2011 – Instant Capo Chords
Finale 2011 automates the process of adding capo chords to your music.

Finale can handle notation for an amazing array of fretted instruments.
Enter notes directly into TAB staves using a mouse, computer keyboard, or MIDI device. Or copy from a companion Standard Notation Staff to a TAB staff and vice-versa. Specify the lowest fret to use as you paste.

Once the music is in the tab staff, it is incredibly easy and intuitive to edit. For example, to change a fret number from '2' to '3', just select the note and type '3'.

Up and Down arrow keys move a selected number to other strings. Numbers appear in orange when out of fret range.

Finale’s handling of stems in tablature is unequaled in ease and power. Various stem styles are easily applied. Use the "Tab Styles" library that comes with Finale or create your own.

- Bends and shapes automatically convert when you paste between Standard and TAB staves.
- Notating hammer-ons, pull-offs, bends, and releases is a breeze.
- User-defined defaults for guitar bends are standard.
- Custom Smart Shapes now contain an expanded list of guitar-specific lines.
- Bends can effortlessly do stair steps and double bends.

Slurs

Finale’s engraver-quality slurs, introduced with Finale 2002, revolutionized music notation software with their ability to automatically snap to avoid collisions – even after transpositions that cause stems to flip.

Slurs have also been fine-tuned to ensure that edits made at high view percentages always produce the same results when viewed at 100% and when printed – and that on-screen appearance is consistently representative of high-resolution output so there are no surprises at the printer.

Editing Tools

Finale’s introduction in 1988 represented a revolution in saving time. Today it is taken for granted that you don’t have to start over if you decide to add another bar on page one, or make a slight change in instrumentation. Teach Composition with Studio View

With Studio View™ in Finale, students compose, learn, and notate all at once. Then they can print the results as engraver-quality sheet music.

Students build a composition by adding to it piece by piece, line by line. Experimentation is fast, easy, and always performed in standard music notation. Changing, modifying, and improving the work is possible because Finale empowers students to make creative choices.

Students work in standard music notation at all times. There is no need to switch to separate sequencing software or learn complex computer symbols.

How does it work?
Studio View puts power at students’ fingertips, allowing them to shape compositions right before their eyes and ears.

1. Create
Simply by clicking the Record button, students craft melodies and try different notes. Students see the notes appear on the staff and hear them played with superb sounds

2. Experiment
While listening to the melody, students experiment with counter-melodies, canons, and the like. Studio View plays back these experiments, encouraging students to make choices.

Choose
Studio View encourages intelligent choices. With melody and counter-melody working together, students continue to experiment with harmonies, bass lines, and instrumentation. Band-in-a-Box Auto-Harmonizing, Drum Groove, and other composition tools provide creative options. With each choice, students shape their music and make it their own.

Colored Noteheads

Colored noteheads have multiple applications and are especially popular in elementary education.
- Use them to notate Boomwhackers® tuned percussion tubes and other instruments that use the Chroma-Notes™ colored music system.
- Assign colors to specific pitches as an aid to composition or proofing.
- Color all noteheads a single bright color for beginning readers who need help distinguishing noteheads from stems.
- Colored noteheads can be applied regionally within a piece, offer two notehead styles (with or without a “border”), and allow for user customization of colors.

Boomwhackers® Tube Sounds
Finale even includes integrated Boomwhackers sound samples. These sounds and colors are configured automatically when you select Boomwhackers from the Setup Wizard.

New in Finale 2011 – AlphaNotes™ Font places notes inside noteheads.

Hiding Staves – Improved in Finale 2011

Staff Layout capabilities make it simple and intuitive to hide, move, and edit staves, groups, and brackets. Work in any order you wish, change your mind whenever you want, and never lose a note.

Finale 2011 has made Staff Layout easy. If the oboe doesn't play on this page you can easily hide the oboe staff. If you change your mind and add some notes, the oboe staff automatically reappears. If you'd like to hide staves containing music, that's been simplified too; but you'll never hide music by accident.

Hiding Empty Staves
Finale makes it easy to hide staves that don't contain music, in your whole score or selected regions. On-screen feedback and new contextual menus offer instant access to hidden staves.

Auto-Showing Music
If you choose to hide empty staves in your score, and then subsequently move measures or add notes to the hidden staves, the appropriate notes and staves now automatically appear.

Hiding Staves Containing Music
Finale even makes it easy to hide staves that contain music.
- Need parts for an instrument that you don't want to appear in the score? Simply hide staves in the score.
- Want an unseen playback effect? Hide a staff!
- On-screen feedback makes it clear when music is hidden and new contextual menus make it instantly accessible. Finale makes it easy and flexible.

Moving and Editing Staves – Improved in Finale 2011

Staff Layout capabilities make it simple and intuitive to hide, move, and edit staves, groups, and brackets. Work in any order you wish, change your mind whenever you want, and never lose a note.

Finale 2011 has made Staff Layout easy. The complexity has been taken out of moving staves, reordering staves, and working with staff and group names and brackets, while adding flexibility. Ease of use AND flexibility means freedom to go anywhere the music takes you.

Moving Staves
It’s now incredibly easy to move staves. Want to increase the distance between staves? Click and drag.
- Your music updates automatically as you drag and you receive on-screen feedback about the distance between the staves and what staves will be impacted.
- As you drag a staff handle up or down, all subsequent staves move too, retaining their relative positioning.
- No additional steps are required to move one staff in this system only or the whole score, or to move multiple staves in selected systems.
- Plus, when you add a new system it will now reflect the staff spacing of the previous system.

Reordering Staves
Finale makes it easy to move staves or groups of staves with a single click – while retaining all positioning. No more dragging and repositioning.

Live Dragging
Dragging or nudging one staff now also moves the staves below it to retain relative staff spacing and the dragging moves the staves in real-time, so you instantly see the results.

Editing Groups and Brackets
The process of editing group names and brackets, and to change groups and brackets for the whole score or just selected regions, has been simplified.
- Groups automatically adjust their measure ranges when measures are added or removed.
- It's also easy to have full staff and group names appear anywhere in your score which is very helpful when you're starting a new movement in the same Finale file.

Document Styles

Create the look you want with personal Document Styles. Choose from a wide variety of styles or create your own to instantly personalize the appearance of new documents. Simply select a Document Style on the first screen of the Set-up Wizard to get the visual results you want, and save time.

Documents Styles control:
- Text and music fonts
- Text inserts
- All libraries (including expressions, articulations, document settings, etc…)
- Graphics (a company logo, for example)
- Page size and orientation
- Page layout
- Measure numbering and much more…

Create Your Own
It’s easy to create your own Document Styles. Just copy a completed Finale file (including notes) into the Document Styles folder and its settings become the basis for a new Document Style. Finale automatically knows what items pertain to the style, and which, like notes, do not. The next time you visit the Set-up Wizard you’ll be able to select your new Document Style.

Textured Paper

Choose from over a dozen different paper textures and colors so your on-screen page is easy on the eyes and aesthetically pleasing when entering notes or editing.
