Altiverb 7 is the industry standard convolution reverb plug-in. It uses top quality samples of real spaces to create reverb, ranging from Sydney Opera House to the cockpit of a Jumbo Jet. Altiverb 7 is efficient on the cpu, offers many parameters to tweak reverb, is total recall automatable, and has 64 bit support. Every month Altiverb 7 users receive new impulse responses for free.
Altiverb's concert halls and recording studio spaces are geared towards music production, but also its plate reverbs and digital reverb gear. But there is more for music: algorithmic brightness, modulation, stage positioning, and tempo locked gated and reverse reverbs. And you can make fantastic textures by using any sound as an impulse response.
Music Spaces
The Altiverb Library of Acoustics contains the most sought after spaces for music. The main concert halls of the cities of Berlin, Los Angeles Vienna and Amsterdam for your orchestral work. Or legendary rock studios from New York or Paris. But you can also put your audio in French Cathedrals, the Gol Gumbaz of India or London's Wembley stadium.
Vintage Gear
Altiverb contains a tremendous amount of classic reverb gear and purpose built echo chambers. You'll find all the EMT plates you want, spring reverbs, classic digital gear like the 480, 224, the AMS RMX 16 or the EMT 240. Add the Frank Sinatra and Beach Boys echo chambers and you have everything you need to recreate all those classic sounds.
Experimental Responses
Grab any sound from your tracks or the Finder and toss it on Altiverb to use it as an impulse response. Try piano chords, breaking glass, spoken word, thunder or a drum loop. In convolution each sample of the input is replaced by the entire impulse response. So if you use a piano chord as an impulse Response, and you clap your hands into Altiverb, out comes the chord.
Stage Positioning
An exhaustive recording session in a Viennese concert hall gave us an algorithm that allows you to accurately place your sound anywhere on stage of all our concert halls, or in any of our other rooms. Physically correct sound placement using the Altiverb Stage Positioner creates a stunningly realistic audio panorama.
Musical gates and delays
To tie your reverb effects more to your tracks Altiverb 7 features a reverb gate that is set using note values. And it is tied to your song's tempo. Any reverb tail can be reversed and handles the same way, and Altiverb's pre-delay can also be set in this manner, so it is easy to put that slap-back delay in a musical spot.
Brightness and Chaos
The Brightness parameter closely fits a classic synthetic reverb on top of the Impulse Response. This adds a particular brightness in a way EQ never can. Toss in a bit of chaotic modulation in your reverb and not every hit will sound identical in the reverb. Slightly out of tune notes will be covered up in the reverb tail by modulation.

TDM simplified
In Altiverb 7 XL, the TDM chip management can be done from within Altiverb, using one handy pop-up menu. This feature does away with the long list of Altiverbs in the TDM plug-in popup. On top of that Altiverb 7 XL allows the loading of all IR types (down to mono in / mono out) into a stereo to quad instance of Altiverb.
Total Recall Automation
Everything, including the impulse response choice is automatable in Altiverb 7. This means that you do not have to jump through hoops to fully automate Altiverb 7. And while there are still single-click snapshots, you do not need them to automate Altiverb. You can even read which IR is chosen in the automation curve.
Drag and drop
Just drop any audio onto Altiverb 7 to use it as an impulse response: sweep recordings, several type claps or bangs, or any kind of experimental audio like crashing cars or piano chords. The drag and drop IR feature includes new make-up curves that allows the making of decent IRs using a handheld portable radio, or even slates.
Whether you are sampling a bed room or a digital reverb unit, whether you use a portable radio or Pro Tools connected to a PA system, the basic steps are always the same:
1. you select a sound to put into your space or gear,
2. you record what comes out of the space or the gear, and
3. you drop the recordings onto Altiverb.
Sampling Acoustic Spaces using sweep playback
The files here are 44.1 kHz interleaved 24 bits stereo wave files that have proven to transfer well to many hardware players. The sweep is in the Left channel of the file. If you want to record using a DAW, just split the stereo files and use only the sweep channel.
Recommended sweep file for all general purposes:
- 30s sweep for 16sec reverb 44k.wav
- It takes about 1 minute to get max 16 seconds of reverb.
In a hurry ?
On a busy film set when people are waiting, time is limited. When you do not have the time to use an entire minute per take use one of shorter sweeps below. Do select the proper sweep for the length of the reverb you wish to sample.

Treating the results
Several types of audio can be dropped onto Altiverb and made into Impulse Responses. All of them require you to drop the recording onto the IR import tab of Altiverb.
Use dropped audio without post Processing
Select this if the audio you are dropping is a finished impulse response (downloaded from somewhere, or obtained using a digital spike recording through effect gear) , or if you want to experiment using other audio. Special effects can be achieved by using audio such as piano chords, breaking glass, spoken word, or drum rhythms. Select this item, drop the audio and listen to the result. Whenever you like an impulse response do not forget to save it using the save to User IR folder button. Using audio like piano or voice normally results in material that sounds too dull. You need to really boost high frequencies. This is what the turning knob is for. It is a special type EQ called Enhance. What happens when you use a piano chord as an IR and then sing through Altiverb, is much like what happens when, in lighting, you want to use a blue and a red translucent filter to create a purple one. It does become purple, but it also becomes rather dark. In audio, the piano has a ‘pink’ distribution of frequencies. Pink means the high frequencies roll off at a certain very natural rate. The voice is ‘pink’ as well. Convolute them, which is a multiplication in the frequency domain, and you will see the roll-off slope is twice as steep. Very unnatural. To make up for that you can use the enhance knob which is a pink-to-white EQ and can bring back the high frequencies.
Treat dropped audio as a sweep played back through a quality speaker
from above you can download sound files that contain a sweep tone. They are meant to be played back in a room of which you want to capture the reverb in an impulse response. Microphones should be used to record the playing back of the sweep tone in the room. The resulting recording can be dropped onto Altiverb. When this quality speaker option is selected The sweep tone will be calculated out of the recording and you will hear the resulting reverb right away. Altiverb will assume that you have used a quality speaker to play back the audio and will not attempt to make up for any frequency deficiencies of the speaker. There are many advantages of using the audio ease method of creating impulse responses. The sweep is not equal loudness throughout, its level is higher where most speakers can take it and where the ear is more sensitive, resulting in less noise. The Altiverb sweep method is immune to clock differences between playback and recording gear. Altiverb is unique in this respect. You can safely use one recorder to play back the sweep and another to record. You can playback and record at vastly or slightly differing samplerates, it is all no problem to Altiverb. Third and fifth harmonic distortion, happening in a speaker that gets overloaded, sounds like a reflection of the sweep that started earlier than the sweep itself. In the result that will be cut off and will not affect the result. All reverb tails eventually dive into noise. At that point Altiverb needs to figure out how to fade out the tail. Audio Ease’s extensive experience has resulted in the best fading algorithms, carefully taking into account the exact shape and onset of both reverb and noise. Many of the ground breaking technology improvements that have led to the quality of the Altiverb IR library are available to you, in Altiverb’s 7 drag and drop sweep method.
Treat dropped audio as a sweep played back through a Tivoli PAL radio
You play back a sweep much like described under quality speaker, but this time through a Tivoli PAL portable battery powered radio. The Tivoli PAL radio is small, surprisingly wide-band, portable, available for over a decade now, and you can plug your iPod or other playback device right into its back. For making quick Impulse responses intended for treating voices it can be ideal. However, the EQ curve of the Tivoli speaker goes up and down like nothing else, so to iron that out, choose this option.
Treat dropped audio as slate claps
If you need to match audio from the set and the only thing you can find to make an impulse response from is the slate clap, you can cut it out drop it onto Altiverb and make an IR out of it. Audio Ease has sampled the characteristics of the two most common slates (clapper boards). The Denecke and the Ambient. If the results come out too noisy you can use the Browser’s similar function (p. 18) to suggest impulse responses from the Altiverb IR library that come close.
Treat dropped audio as starter pistol shots
A six millimeter caliber Flobert starter pistol can be used to make impulse responses. Use hearing protection when you use these and don’t try to carry a starter pistol into a public space without telling everybody first. Because a starter pistol is loud the resulting signal to noise ratio is second only to the sweep method.
Chaos
Dial in a bit of chaotic modulation and not every hit will sound identical in the reverb. As a bonus tonal material will be dispersed which means that slightly out of tune notes will be covered up in the reverb tail.
Interactive EQ curve
To operate the equalizers you can still use the familiar turning knobs. But Altiverb 7 adds an interactive equalizer curve that allows you to set al four bands including the widths of the parametric ones.
And More...
Altiverb supports 64 bits. It has a new reverb gate, and straightforward pre-delay and attack parameters. Times can be set in note values locked to your song's tempo, and you have 10 times as much space in the stage positioner.
King of spaces
