RME is well known for high quality A/D converters and their Firewire Audio series is no exception. Professional features found in the Fireface 400 include active jitter suppression, stand-alone functionality and complete controllability from the front panel. Like the Fireface 800, the 400 offers a lot of flexibility, as shown by the 648-channel matrix router.
The FireFace 400 offers 8 in and outs along with wordclock I/O and two MIDI I/O's. Two of the 8 inputs are XLR/TRS combo inputs with high quality mic pre amps. You can even control the software via MIDI, and with built in flash ram, you can even use the device independently from the computer. It will retain all settings, and is still controllable via MIDI even without a computer nearby! When you are using it with the computer, the built in DSP processing allows the software to Furthermore the DSP hardware calculates RMS and Peak levels for all 54 audio channels.
The FireFace 400 is definitely above and beyond the typical Firewire sound cards currently on the market. If you are looking for the best possible results for your audio recording needs, then the FireFace 400 is a great choice.
