How can students learn and practice the art of conducting an orchestra – without an orchestra? Notion Conducting has been putting a responsive virtual orchestra into selected classrooms across the nation. Real-world feedback was collected from students and faculty at select locations to guide Notion in the design of its second major release. And now Notion has made the newest edition of this curriculum available for world-wide distribution (to help this, translations of the accompanying workbook are available in German, Italian, French, and Spanish).
Imagine placing the sounds of the entire London Symphony Orchestra into the hands of the Conducting class – every day. Students can master the nuances of conducting by leading classmates exactly as if they were an entire ensemble with actual instruments.
NOTION Conducting is the only teaching solution that combines the superior playback and continuous tempo control of software along with instructive videos (view samples, right) and full-sized workbook built around a curriculum of standard symphonic literature.
Wouldn't your students prefer conducting the London Symphony Orchestra rather than CDs?
Augmenting existing curricula with NOTION Conducting provides full class involvement (with an element of fun), immediate feedback, useful homework, independent score study, and frees the instructor to concentrate on each individual student's continued improvement.
Workbook Curriculum
The workbook includes Conducting fundamentals, exercises, and scores arranged in increasing difficulty. Titles include:
•Bach: Chorale
•Holst: Second Suite for Band, Mvt. III
•Ravel: Mother Goose Suite excerpts
•Beethoven: Symphony No. 1, Mvt. I
•Mozart: Overture to the Magic Flute
•Tchaikovsky: Romeo and Juliet Overture
•Wagner: Prelude to Tristan and Isolde
•Debussy: Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun
•Puccini: “Mi Chiamano Mimi” – with a real soprano voice
Available in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
The plug-and-play software requires no special technical skills: just open a score and start playing. Students can:
•Control tempo by tapping on a computer or MIDI keyboard.
•Play certain instruments or sections from built-in layouts or audio mixer.
•Visually progress through the score during playback with no page breaks.
•Start on any beat and jump to specific measures or rehearsal marks.
•Edit dynamics, articulations, or metronome marks and instantly hear the result.
•Watch full-motion videos of lessons, exercises, and scores in the workbook.
•Learn to hear wrong notes and other deviations from the original score.
It's Downright Upbeat
The software has been enhanced from top to bottom: tailoring all features to the needs of conducting students and teachers. Along with its fresh look are streamlined procedures and additional visual aids.
For example, now students can progress through a score in a continuous scroll (no more disruptive page breaks). A floating Margin at the far left of the score identifies the instrument on each staff and updates to display the current key and time signatures. Another visual enhancement is the Performance Display at the top of the window. This area informs the student on playback conditions such as the current tempo (in beats per measure) next to the notated tempo, info on where the student is in a repeat, what the Rehearsal mark for the current measure is, and more – all at a glance.
Doesn't That Beat All?
With the second edition of Notion Conducting, students can:
- Conduct a virtual orchestra made up of fellow students, each controlling a portion of the orchestra in response to the conductor's gestures, to provide immediate aural feedback. No matter what the class size is, the conductor hears a complete ensemble.
- Play any section, any combination of instruments, or even a single instrument of their own choosing – or they can use convenient pre-defined layouts built right into each score – and follow the conductor by tapping on either a computer or MIDI keyboard.
- Study more than strictly orchestral works. Band is now included.
- Fashion their own musical interpretations. As a homework assignment (or in self-study) a student can add, delete, or change tempo, dynamic, and articulation marks in the score to create different musical effects that will be heard in playback.
- Become thoroughly familiar with outstanding scores by master composers in a systematic progression from a simple chorale to an operatic aria. The workbook has been expanded to include a number of preparatory exercises.
- Listen to individual instruments or any combination of instruments to discover how they contribute to the overall sound texture.
- Mute one or more parts to play live instruments with full orchestral accompaniment.
- Enjoy enhanced navigation: start on any beat of any bar, skip over repeats, vamp, and more.
- Learn to hear wrong notes and other deviations from the original score. A teacher can make alterations for students to detect.
Watch Some Videos for Homework
One of the most exciting additions to the newest release is an entire series of video lessons of Conducting basics and performances of all the scores and exercises in the workbook (performed by Dr. Jack Jarrett and Dr. David Oertel). Since conducting is such an animated skill, this collection of full-motion video clips is an extremely valuable aid to help students master the subtle nuances of this craft.
