Basics
Audio Hardware
Cubase runs on nearly every audio interface available on the market, including all ASIO- and Core Audio-compatible audio hardware, ready for immediate use. Because countless professional vendors offer interfaces in every price class and with the most diverse analog and digital I/O options, Cubase allows you to to configure the setup that meets your individual needs and best suits your working environment.
Project Window
As the primary window in Cubase Studio 4, the Project window affords you a view of the arrangement and its various tracks. The Project window is fully scalable; you can hide and show tools and display panels at will to adapt the window to the requirements of the task at hand. Folder tracks provide an excellent way of organizing complex arrangements, speeding up workflow.
Located on the left side of the Project window, the Track Inspector provides lightning-fast access to all vital parameters for any track including mixer parameters. This provides an easy way of editing mixer settings right in the Project window without having to open a new one. Not only can every element in the Track Inspector can be shown or hidden, but the the ordering of items is also completely customizable for each track or track type.
Workflow
Cubase Studio 4 was developed specifically to enable efficient, ergonomic handling that is easily personalized to satisfy your requirements. Keyboard shortcuts are available for nearly all functions in Cubase Studio 4. You can assign these key commands freely and export the entire set if you wish to use your personalized key commands on other systems. Preprogrammed key configurations are available if you are adopting Cubase now but have experience with another program to ensure a painless changeover. If you wish to jump quickly to specific locations within arrangement, you can place markers at any position. The Workspace function lets you create different window layouts that are accessible via key commands. You are free to create the perfect panel for every step of the production process. Cubase Studio 4 offers unlimited undo so you can give your creative urges free rein: Go ahead and try anything out; you can always cancel any number of editing actions if it doesn’t work out.
Pattern-based arranging
While many other DAW applications force you to use a specific way of working, Cubase Studio 4 allows a free choice between timeline-based and pattern-based arranging - both directly accessible within the Cubase Studio 4 Project window.
The Play Order Track is an intuitive alternative to linear arrangements. Parts of a song or production can be defined as Play Order Parts, the order sequence and repetitions of which can be handled in a, easy-to-use editor. Different versions of a project can be created and compared in next to no time - without the original version being altered. The resequenced project can then be transformed into a traditional linear arrangement with a single mouse click.
Resource Management
Cubase Studio 4 offers functions enabling you to create complex arrangements that require less computing power and let you use performance-hungry plug-ins. As the name would suggest, the Freeze function freezes VST instruments or audio tracks with insert effects. The track is mixed into a temporary audio file, freeing up sufficient resources for further processing. Unlike conventional track bouncing, which requires you to commit early on, freezing grants you greater flexibility throughout the production process because its actions can be undone at any time. You have another easy option for tapping additional resources – simply connect computers via the VST System Link. By linking two computers via a conventional digital audio connection, you can trigger one computer plug-ins’ with sample precision and have the other do the computing. This lets you combine the two computer systems’ performance power.
Audio Recording and Editing
Be it studio recording or mobile live recording, the award-winning Cubase audio engine delivers pristine 24-bit/96-kHz audio quality, with 32-bit floating point resolution for internal signal processing. With its open file handling concept, Cubase Studio 4 can use a mix of bit rates within the same project without prior conversion. Professionally tried and tested recording features including numerous different recording modes, such as Stacked Recording, make not just recording with Cubase easy, but later editing and comping a breeze.
Cubase Studio 4 offers not only a huge range of new first-class VST3 effect plug-ins but a dedicated Sample Editor for surgical processing of any audio material. Alongside a vast arsenal of vital functions such as cuts, fades, pitch-shifting and time-stretching, Cubase Studio 4 features numerous special functions for adapting loops to existing audio material.
With the help of fully automatic hit-point recognition and the awesome Extended Audio Warp tools, tasks such as adapting a drum loop to the song tempo, transposing a recording in real time and transferring grooves from an audio file to a MIDI track are accomplished in just a few steps - and in breathtaking quality. In Cubase Studio 4, editing audio material is a non-destructive operation - all edits are stored in the Task List and can be undone at any time. In addition, an offline process history lets you remove, replace and edit every effect added to an audio file in the course of processing
MIDI Sequencing
Cubase Studio 4 offers versatile, easy-to-use tools and editors for MIDI sequencing and composition. You can import MIDI parts via drag & drop or play on a connected keyboard MIDI and record parts directly. Various highly versatile editors put numerous tools at your fingertips; they afford you access to every conceivable MIDI parameter for purposes of further processing.
Key Editor
The graphical Key editor lets you intuitively generate and process notes and other MIDI events such as velocity or MIDI controllers. With the Inplace Editing function, you can also process MIDI parts directly in the Project window in context with other tracks.
Drum Editor
The Drum editor was developed especially for drum sequencing. A few clicks are all it takes to create complete drum tracks. And you can create an individual drum map for every employed instrument.
List Editor
The List editor shows all the events of a MIDI part as a list indicating numeric values. A display filter lets you show and hide special events.
MIDI Effects
Cubase Studio 4 offers numerous MIDI effect plug-ins for every MIDI track, including creative tools such as an Arpeggiator, a MIDI pattern sequencer and a MIDI chord processor, as well as functional plug-ins such as a MIDI compressor for equalizing velocity variance and a Context Gate for selective MIDI data triggering/filtering. Sixteen different MIDI effect plug-ins are available. You can insert most effects directly while playing and of course automate them as well.
Quantization Functions
Alongside standard quantization options for fixing mistakes, Cubase Studio 4 offers special quantization functions that you can use for creative purposes. Ultra precise quantization right on the beat usually sounds stale. Cubase Studio 4 solves the problem by letting you do things like exempt selected notes from the quantization operation or automatically generate random mistakes. Twist the Swing knob, and the position of every other note is shifted slightly in the grid to create swinging or shuffled grooves. What’s more, you can extract grooves from MIDI parts and audio events and store them as quantization presets
Mixing
The Cubase Studio 4 Mixer offers every facility you need to create stereo and surround mixes of the highest standard:
- Up to 128 physical inputs/outputs
- 8 inserts per channel
- 8 FX sends, including FX return channels
- Up to 256 groups/busses
- Drag & Drop copying, moving and swapping of insert plug-ins
- Automatic and system-wide latency compensation
- Copy/Paste of entire Mixer channels, even to multiple destinations
- Customizable metering including colorization
Personalized Views
You can flexibly adapt mixer views to suit the task at hand. Three freely configurable mixer views are available in Cubase Studio 4. You can configure each mixer window so that it shows a specific combination of channels, channel types and zooms, an option you’ll find especially helpful when mixing big projects. Mixer views can be also be stored as presets.
The Channel Strip window for audio and MIDI tracks can now also be configured to reflect your desired display options. Sections can be switched on or off, and their order from left to right can also be setup exactly the way you want. Configurations can, of course, be saved and recalled as view presets.
Full Automation
Every mixer knob may be automated. Cubase Studio 4 supports numerous external controllers that let you ergonomically control the VST Mixer and intuitively record fades and pans.
Full Export Options
With the Export function, you can save the finished mix in almost all standard formats, for instance, AIFF, Sound Designer II, Wave, Wave 64, Broadcast Wave, MP3, Windows Media AudioPro. By bouncing tracks offline, you can save considerable time when creating comparison mixes. Surround projects can be exported directly in these professional multi-channel formats via optional encoders for Dolby Digital and DTS.
Automation
Cubase Studio 4 offers a fully-featured automation system that allows you to automate nearly all mixer and effect parameters. The same goes for VST instruments, regardless of whether they are integrated plug-ins or third-party vendors’ instruments. Cubase Studio 4 even offers five different automation modes: Touch Fader, Auto Latch, X-Over, Overwrite and Trim.
The Automation system in Cubase provdes two options for automating parameters:
Drawing Automation Envelopes
Every track in the Project window contains automation sub-tracks for all automatable parameters of the given track type, which you can show and hide on demand.
Cubase Studio 4 allows you to draw and edit automation envelopes directly in the panel, and puts several line and curve tools at your disposal to do this.
Automation via the Write and Read Buttons
The Write and Read buttons allow you to record and play back automation data; Write and Read buttons are available for all mixer channels as well
Effect Plug-ins
Designed to put a fully-fledged virtual studio at your fingertips, Cubase Studio 4 features a complete set of first-rate effect plug-ins for mixing, mastering and creating imaginative sound effects. In addition, many reputable audio software vendors offer effects in the renowned VST format that plug right into Cubase.
Cubase Studio 4 compensates for delays throughout the signal path to ensure proper synchronization and timing regardless of the employed plug-ins’ latency.

Media Management
SoundFrame - Universal Sound Manager
SoundFrame™ is the collective name for a number of new features that form a breathtakingly powerful new system that manages all your sounds, presets and loops in one centralized database. Thanks to the excellent integration within the creative composition and production processes, SoundFrame™ has the power to revolutionize your workflow. The heart of SoundFrame™ is MediaBay, a high-performance media database with outstanding search and categorization features. If you’re looking, say, for a piano sound suitable for jazz with warm characteristics, just set these filters in the MediaBay and the right sounds will be shown there, regardless of which instruments provide them. MediaBay also allows previewing of loops in the song context including the tempo. Track Presets can also save huge amounts of time – importing, say, a vocal track loads EQ and your favorite compressor with all settings. And these are just several of the ways that SoundFrame™ can radically speed up your workflow: once it’s a part of your production process, you’ll wonder how you managed without…
MediaBay is the central Media Management system introduced with Cubase 4, and sets new standards in convenient, easy handling of instrument and plug-in presets, audio loops and clips, MIDI files, Track Presets, videos and even entire Cubase project files. MediaBay is so much more than traditional file browsers because it binds all media resources on your system directly into your creative composition and production processes.
MediaBay searches your hard drives automatically for media files and gives direct access through a clearly laid out file browser. User-definable search locations and a powerful filter section and category search functions make finding exactly the right sound easier than ever before, regardless of where the sound is located. The search results can be sorted by category, file type or any user-defined attribute. The desired sound is then simply pulled into the project using drag & drop. MediaBay even offers file organization capabilities such as cut, copy, paste, delete and rename, allowing you to manage and organize your media files directly within Cubase.
The Scope section shows a preview of the selected file; MediaBay then allows you to instantly preview audio and MIDI files as well as Instrument presets – even in the context of the project if desired. With the Tag Editor you can give any media file either your own attributes or use the range of predefined labels. These form the basis for the powerful category search and filter functionality that quickly becomes indispensable.
Cubase 4 also offers countless predefined Track Presets and categorized Instrument Presets – stored ‘patches’ containing all track or instrument information – that reveal the depth of the MediaBay concept. As well as the main window view, adapted MediaBay views can be called up in different areas of Cubase. The Loop Browser offers one-click access to your loop library and features previewing in the song tempo, while the SoundFrame™ Browser provides direct access to presets for any VST instruments, effect plug-ins and external hardware. When creating a new Instrument Track, for example, the SoundFrame™ Browser already provides exactly the right sound when loading the instrument. VSTi's and available external MIDI instruments can even be previewed directly in the SoundFrame™ Browser without you even having to load the required instrument in the VST Rack.
The Pool serves not only as a list of all audio and video clips used by a project, but also offers many processing tools for audio files shown there, including file format conversion and effect rendering. The entire Pool can also be archived and imported to another project – a boon for tzransferring projects to another Mac or PC.
Video
Cubase Studio 4 is an excellent tool for composing movie soundtracks and scoring videos. It supports numerous standard formats (AVI, MPEG, Quicktime and many more) to ensure utmost compatibility with all types of video files.
You may opt to view video material in a freely scalable video window within Cubase Studio 4 or, in combination with the requisite video hardware, on an external monitor. Another alternative is full-resolution image output via Firewire (currently available for Mac OSX only).
Cubase Studio 4 offers a special type of video track. Video files are as easy to insert as audio files, for example, via drag & drop. You can view the video’s individual frames directly in the track as thumbnails, which tremendously facilitates composing soundtracks with frame-by-frame precision.
