Computer

What do I need?

Technology changes so quickly that a computer considered current today become obsolete tomorrow!  The trick is to find a computer that will meet your current and future needs while also fitting your budget.

Most educational software will require a computer with a CD-ROM drive, a soundcard and at least 32MB of RAM.  Higher end digital audio applications will require a much faster system, with bigger hard drives and more RAM.

Of course you will want a decent soundcard, speakers, headphones and a microphone.  Larger sized monitors are recommended for music notation or digital audio.

If you are buying a computer, try to find somebody who understands what you will be using it for.  Unfortunately, most computer stores don’t understand the difference between a soundblaster soundcard and a “real” professional level soundcard.  I liken it to the difference between a kazoo and a trumpet!

Kelly’s Music & Computers will custom build systems to meet your needs, but even if you can’t buy it from us, we would be happy to explain to your computer people exactly what you will need to make music!

Buying Used

Obviously it helps to always have the latest and greatest when it comes to technology, but sometimes you have to work with what you have.  Many educators start out by cobbling together hardware from various sources.  Do not overlook the many sources of used computers.  Many businesses and parents are happy to donate their old computers to a school.  It is amazing what you can still do on older computers.  Eventually, however, you will probably need to invest some money into technology.  In addition to your typical sources, remember that technology sells.  Government, business and the public place a high value on technology.  Do not be afraid to promote the benefits of using technology in music education, you may be surprised at the interest in generates.

Input

Keyboards

One of the most common ways to input music on a computer is through a MIDI compatible keyboard.  Any keyboard with MIDI will do, ranging from an inexpensive 49 key controller, to a MIDI grand!

Controllers are basically keyboards without any sounds built-in to them.  By relying on the sounds from your computer’s soundcard or an external module, you save money by not including sound in the keyboard.  We carry controllers as small as 32 keys – perfect for small spaces, up to the full 88 keys.  The smaller controllers have octave up and down buttons which can be used to achieve the full range of the keyboard, but are not useful for live recordings involving the whole keyboard!  For ear training, note reading and other activities, however, the 49 key controllers usually work very well.

Microphones

Microphones are another useful tool for entering music into the computer.  Many ear training programs require a microphone for sight-singing.  In these cases, I recommend using an inexpensive “boom” mic, or a more convenient headset which incorporates the mic.  Inexpensive mics are preferred, since they won’t pick up the harmonics or overtones of a voice and confuse the computer.

For digital audio recording, it is important to have good microphones.  Your recording is only as good as the weakest component, and unfortunately microphones are often misunderstood.  Our FAQ on selecting and using microphones is a good place to start!
